Jesus is my Master and the Messiah (anointed one of God). It is a gift from Jesus that I am redeemed from living a life condemned to missing God’s goal for my life. I don’t have a license to continue on with that kind of life.
Not everyone who claims to follow Jesus and the way of life he has given us is “a Christian”. Some are in fact scoundrels. I need to be able to discern the message to see if it is the good news from the Messiah.
I share with the the members of the faith a common life. We must all guard that gift. I must cherish it. No one else can do for me what Jesus has done. Now that is some good news for sure.
Dear friends, I’ve dropped everything to write you about this life of salvation that we have in common. I have to write insisting—begging!—that you fight with everything you have in you for this faith entrusted to us as a gift to guard and cherish. What has happened is that some people have infiltrated our ranks (our Scriptures warned us this would happen), who beneath their pious skin are shameless scoundrels. Their design is to replace the sheer grace of our God with sheer license—which means doing away with Jesus the Messiah, our one and only Master.
