Herod bore the title of tetrarch (“ruler of a quarter”) and is referred to as both “Herod the Tetrarch” and “King Herod”. Herod had a “Jesus problem”. Herod was confused. It showed.

Herod asked a reasonable question. Who is Jesus? He wanted to see Jesus in action. How do I answer the question of who Jesus is? Can I be clear about that?

Am I presenting Jesus in such a way that others want to know who Jesus is? Do they want to see Jesus in action?

Herod, the ruler, heard of these goings on and didn’t know what to think. There were people saying John had come back from the dead, others that Elijah had appeared, still others that some prophet of long ago had shown up. Herod said, “But I killed John—took off his head. So who is this that I keep hearing about?” Curious, he looked for a chance to see him in action.
