Am I thinking, if I can just touch Jesus, He will heal me?
It is a good question. Sometimes I believe yes, sometimes I don’t even think about it. I am forgetful of who Jesus is and the good news He has for me. I have faith but I need more faith.
Jesus was creating quite the stir. Multitudes were coming to him. They were hearing the message of good news. Jesus was healing them all. Every single one of them. They believed He could do it and he did.
A woman who had suffered a condition of hemorrhaging for twelve years—a long succession of physicians had treated her, and treated her badly, taking all her money and leaving her worse off than before—had heard about Jesus. She slipped in from behind and touched his robe. She was thinking to herself, “If I can put a finger on his robe, I can get well.” The moment she did it, the flow of blood dried up. She could feel the change and knew her plague was over and done with.
At the same moment, Jesus felt energy discharging from him. He turned around to the crowd and asked, “Who touched my robe?” Source: Mark 5:25-30 (The Message)
This woman suffered horribly. She had been hemorrhaging for 12 years. That is a long time to suffer this way. She had done everything she could. She went to doctor after doctor. The treatments were excruciating. She spent all of her money and had nothing left. Sick and now poor.
But there is good news. She heard of Jesus and what he could do. Jesus is healing everyone. Now she has hope. But not just hope, she believes. She believes something radical. She knows that if she can just touch Jesus, she will be healed. She carries out her plan. She goes and finds Jesus. She touches his robe in the maddening throng around him. She is healed.
Jesus is the most aware person on the planet. He knows what happens as he feels the “energy” leave him. The Greek here is δύναμις dunamis, doo´-nam-is; a force or miraculous power. This is the power of God and Jesus knew it like the back of his hand.
Knowing something happened, Jesus doesn’t keep moving on. Jesus wants to talk with the woman who had such faith. Jesus wants to know “Who touched my robe?” The disciples just want him to keep moving on. Jesus persists. Jesus isn’t going to be deterred. You can’t “handle” Jesus like the secret service handle the President.
Finally the woman fessed up. She was afraid because she was dealing with Jesus. She is trembling. She kneels down in front of him. Perhaps he will show some mercy. Maybe she isn’t really in too much trouble, she hopes. She gives him the whole story. What will Jesus do?
Jesus said to her, “Daughter, you took a risk of faith, and now you’re healed and whole. Live well, live blessed! Be healed of your plague.” What an amazing God we serve.
