Is God fair? Yes. God’s justice is without any partiality. I can trust God completely.
Being just Himself, God calls on me to act justly. It is important. Justice, mercy and faithfulness. Big deals in the world that Jesus is Master of.
“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.” (Matthew 23:23)
Special praise goes to Jesus for vindicating the penitent and the needy who have no human champions. Ultimately, all God’s ways will be seen as just and equitable.
How is God’s justice declared? Justice is a term used for what is right or “as it should be.” Justice is one of God’s attributes and flows out of His holiness. Justice and righteousness are often used synonymously in the Bible. Since righteousness is the quality or character of being right or just, it is another attribute of God and incorporates both His justice and holiness.
Revelation 15:3 (NASB) — And they sang the song of Moses, the bond-servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, “Great and marvelous are Your works, O Lord God, the Almighty; Righteous and true are Your ways, King of the nations!”
Psalm 92:15 (NASB) — To declare that the Lord is upright; He is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.
The moral righteousness of God is revealed in his laws and expressed in his judicial acts. God’s commands and judgments meet perfect standards of justice, and his apportioning of punishments and rewards is also perfectly just. God’s justice is impartial. God is God. God’s justice will be done.
1 Peter 1:17 (NASB) — If you address as Father the One who impartially judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay on earth.
A major aspect of justice is impartiality. A God who did not care about the difference between right and wrong and did not judge me for acting one way or the other would not be an admirable being worthy of my love or trust. The fact that God is just and will judge between right and wrong gives ultimate moral significance to my life and makes me accountable for my actions.
Genesis 18:25 (NASB) — “Far be it from You to do such a thing, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous and the wicked are treated alike. Far be it from You! Shall not the Judge of all the earth deal justly?”
Job 36:3 (NASB) — “I will fetch my knowledge from afar, And I will ascribe righteousness to my Maker.
Psalm 11:7 (NASB) — For the Lord is righteous, He loves righteousness; The upright will behold His face.
Did I mention that God’s justice is a good thing? God is not mean. Justice is required and God is blameless in His approach to justice.
Psalm 25:8 (NASB) — Good and upright is the Lord; Therefore He instructs sinners in the way.
Psalm 33:5 (NASB) — He loves righteousness and justice; The earth is full of the lovingkindness of the Lord.
Psalm 51:4 (NASB) — Against You, You only, I have sinned And done what is evil in Your sight, So that You are justified when You speak And blameless when You judge.
Isaiah 61:8 (NASB) — For I, the Lord, love justice, I hate robbery in the burnt offering; And I will faithfully give them their recompense And make an everlasting covenant with them.
Jeremiah 9:24 (NASB) — but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord who exercises loving kindness, justice and righteousness on earth; for I delight in these things,” declares the Lord.
Zephaniah 3:5 (NASB) — The Lord is righteous within her; He will do no injustice. Every morning He brings His justice to light; He does not fail. But the unjust knows no shame.
