Jesus wants me to accompany him. Jesus wants me to go where He has gone and is going. Jesus wants me to follow Him. I can’t serve Him with accompanying Him, going where He is going. That is how I learn as a disciple.

Let’s get this in context here. Jesus is talking about His death and resurrection. Jesus wants me to go there as well. I am to die to myself and my sin. I am to be resurrected to a new life in Jesus.

That is where Jesus wants me to accompany Him.

Listen carefully: Unless a grain of wheat is buried in the ground, dead to the world, it is never any more than a grain of wheat. But if it is buried, it sprouts and reproduces itself many times over. In the same way, anyone who holds on to life just as it is destroys that life. But if you let it go, reckless in your love, you’ll have it forever, real and eternal. If any of you wants to serve me, then accompany (aka follow) me. Then you’ll be where I am, ready to serve at a moment’s notice. The Father will honor and reward anyone who serves me.

John 12:24-26 (The Message Bible)

  • What should I do? I should, daily, hourly, minute by minute, die to my desires. I must follow Jesus. I must obey my Master. I must be His slave.
  • What is the good news? If I die to myself and devote my life to serving Jesus, I will be with Jesus. I will receive honor from God. I will receive a great reward.
  • Jesus challenges me and gives me my goal. I am to be reckless in my love. I am to let go and let God. There is a huge result from dying in the resurrected life I lead with Jesus.
