God’s Work, our hands

My job is to do the will of God. That is it. There is nothing else. That is the overarching mission. That is the goal. That is the strategy. That is my to do list for today.

There is good news in doing God’s will. I am a member of the family of God. Jesus is clear on this. He declares it with great boldness. Jesus is not going to back off on this. This is amazing news!

While he was still speaking with the crowds, his mother and brothers were standing outside wanting to speak to him. Someone told him, “Look, your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.”

He replied to the one who was speaking to him, “Who is my mother and who are my brothers?” Stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.” | Matthew 12:46-50 (CSB)

Even our Master’s earthly family did not fully understand Him or His ministry. Some of His friends thought He was mad. But Jesus did not want the honor that comes from people. While He was not disrespectful toward His physical family, He did emphasize the family of God.

Note His use of the word “whoever”. This paralleled His beautiful invitation in Matthew 11:28–30 where He encouraged all to trust Him. If the nation would not receive Him, at least individuals within the nation — and among the Gentiles — could trust Him. But what will happen to the promised kingdom? We will inherit it.
