10+ Rest in Jesus ideas | jesus, rest, bible study lessons

We need rest. We get tired.

There is good news. Jesus gives us rest. We find it in Him. Yeshua [Jesus], the  Messiah and King of God’s country, challenges us to come to Him. Of course we are weary. That is something we have to confess to God.

Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” | Matthew 11:28–30

We are carrying too many burdens. They are ours and we love to whine and complain about them. People politely listen. At least we think they do. Maybe they aren’t really. Are we a broken record just droning on while they politely smile while preparing their mental grocery list?

Jesus promises to give us rest. Our job is hitch ourselves to Him. Our rest is in him not sleep and slumber. Jesus assures us it isn’t really difficult but easy. Really? Yes, really!

Our job is to learn from Jesus. How does Jesus do it? Jesus busies Himself with God’s business. We need to learn about gentleness. We need to learn about humility. That leads to rest. We can stop striving.

The need for rest: So how do we stop trusting ourselves? How do we place our full trust in God and His promises? We enter into God’s rest by first understanding our total inability to enter God’s rest on our own. Next, we  enter God’s rest by our total faith in the sacrifice of the Messiah and complete obedience to God and His will.

  • “And to whom did God swear that they would never enter his rest if not to those who disobeyed? So we see that they were not able to enter, because of their unbelief” (Hebrews 3:18–19).
  • Unlike the Israelites whose unbelief prevented them from entering the Promised Land, I am to enter God’s rest by faith in Him, faith which is a gift from Him by grace (Ephesians 2:8–9).
  • Psalm 23:2–3 — He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.
  • Proverbs 17:1 — Better is a dry morsel and quietness with it Than a house full of feasting with strife.
  • Ecclesiastes 4:6 — One hand full of rest is better than two fists full of labor and striving after wind.
  • Mark 6:31 — And He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a secluded place and rest a while. (For there were many people coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.)
