Jesus sometimes called on someone to sell everything they owned and follow Him. Sometimes Jesus suggested someone to not bury a close family member. Jesus knows our limits. Jesus will press on them and bring them to surface.
- What will my reaction be if He asks me to do what I don’t want to do?
- What does Jesus really want?
- Am I listening?
It is a question that begs to be answered.
Jesus tells us to count the cost of following Him. Why? Because it will cost us something dear. Jesus compels us to give up everything to follow Him. EVERYTHING!
- How deep is my commitment?
- What are the limits I have placed on my relationship with God?
- How far is too far?
Honesty compels me to admit I have limits. I don’t want to.
This is where I need God to give me power to be bolder. This is where I need more faith that God is in a good mood and only has good things in store for me.

In Luke 9:59-60 Jesus told a specific person not to bury his dead. I don’t think he intended that as a general rule for everyone. The same goes for selling everything one has in Matthew 19:21.
However, in Matthew 5:28 he gave a general rule for all (men) to follow about adultery.
I think we have to be willing to follow whatever He says generally and there may be some specific things we need to do as well that He will make known through the Holy Spirit.

Knowing I have limits should move me to be more committed and trust in Him!

Amen!
…for where I am weak he is strong…
If He gets the opportunity to shine through my inability and others see Him on display because of my inadequacy, suddenly my inadequacies seem like a blessing to me and to those around me.

I have noticed also that if there is something tough God is going to ask of us, He is gracious and begins to prepare us well in advance. There have been things He has asked of me- moves, ministry positions, etc that were way out of my comfort zone initially, but when the time came to step out and do them, I was chomping at the bit to dive in. That’s our God!

Thanks for an encouraging and thought-provoking post! The limits we have today can/will be removed by God if He needs to move us through them!
