Pure Heart Class

Jesus calls on us to be pure of heart: We need His regenerating Spirit and the blood of His sacrifice to even have a chance. Jesus tells us “Fortunate [blessed] are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” – Matthew 5:8 (ESV)

God’s goal: `God wants us to be pure of heart. Being pure in heart involves having a singleness of heart toward God. A pure heart has no hypocrisy, no guile, no hidden motives. The pure heart is marked by transparency and an uncompromising desire to please God in all things. It is more than an external purity of behavior; it is an internal purity of soul. May it be so for me.

The main thing: According to the Bible, the heart is the center not only of spiritual activity, but of all the operations of human life. “Heart” and “soul” are often used interchangeably.

Assurance Through Inward Experiences of the Renewed Heart

The Bible mentions the human heart almost 300 times. In essence, this is what it says: the heart is that spiritual part of us where our emotions and desires dwell.

God has emotions and desires. He, too, can be said to have a “heart.” We have a heart because God does. David was a man “after God’s own heart”. And God blesses His people with leaders who know and follow His heart.

  • 1 John 3:19–21 (NASB) — We will know by this that we are of the truth, and will assure our heart before Him in whatever our heart condemns us; for God is greater than our heart and knows all things. Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God.
  • Psalm 112:7–8  — He will not fear evil tidings; His heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord. His heart is upheld, he will not fear, Until he looks with satisfaction on his adversaries.

The heart is the core of our being, and the Bible sets high importance on keeping our hearts pure: “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life” (Proverbs 4:23).

  • Romans 8:14–16 — For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God,
  • Ephesians 1:18–19  — I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might
  • 1 John 5:10  — The one who believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself; the one who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has given concerning His Son.
