We all have the same amount of time every day. Jesus challenges us to use it to focus on it on a few very important issues.

  • God-reality – God is first and most importantly God is God. He has a reality that He gives us when we live in His world (Kingdom). His reality is not the reality of this world. We need to focus on what is the reality in Heaven (God’s world). He wants that reality here on earth. He teaches us to pray “your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven”. What is God’s reality? That should be our focus.
  • God-initiative – Everything starts with God. He has created everything. Nothing exists without Him.  Do I see everything that way? Everything in my life, my world, starts with Him. There is not success without Him.
  • God-provisions – God gives us every good thing. He is in a good mood. In fact, He is in a great mood. He wants us to have every good thing. We need to focus on what He has for us and not what we want. Do we see the good He is doing or do we see what He is not doing?

Jesus challenges us to focus. With the help of His Holy Spirit, we can do it.

Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?

English Standard Version. (2016). (Matthew 6:31). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles.

While not a literal translation, here is the paraphrase from the Message Bible.

People who don’t know God and the way he works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how he works. Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met.

Worth noting: To worry about material things is to live like the heathen and God-less agnostics and atheists! If we put God’s will and God’s righteousness first in our lives, He will take care of everything else. What a testimony it is to the world when a follower of Jesus dares to practice Matthew 6:33! What a tragedy it is when so many of us fail to practice it.

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

English Standard Version. (2016). (Mt 6:33). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles.

The bottom line: It is all about the kingdom of God. It is only about the will of God. What does God want is the question. We provide the answer.
