I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
Paul knew something. He was not afraid to say it. God had commissioned him. He was on a mission for God and Jesus. Paul knew why he was doing what he was doing.
Do I know why I am doing what I am doing?
The answer to that is all important. In a world of “you will succeed if you have a mission statement” kind of thinking, what we think our mission is does not matter. What does matter is what is God’s mission for us.
What is God’s mission for me?
Paul, an apostle—not from men nor through man, but through Jesus the Messiah and God the Father, who raised him from the dead—and all the brothers who are with me
The Apostle Paul knew what role God wanted him to play in the church. It was clear to him and revealed to him by God and Jesus.
- Ephesians 5:17 (CSB) — 17 So don’t be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.
- Romans 2:18 (CSB) — 18 and know his will, and approve the things that are superior, being instructed from the law,
- Colossians 1:9 (CSB) — 9 For this reason also, since the day we heard this, we haven’t stopped praying for you. We are asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding,
Our mission from God is to “Present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.” The aim of all human life in God’s eyes is that the Messiah would be made to look as valuable as he is. Worship means using our minds and hearts and bodies to express the worth of God and all he is for us in Jesus. There is a way to live — a way to love — that does that. There is a way to do your job that expresses the true value of God. If you can’t find it, that may mean you should change jobs. Or it might mean that verse 2 is not happening to the degree it should.
How we turn all of life into worship and focus on the will of God? We must be transformed. We must be transformed. Not just our external behavior, but the way we feel and think — our minds. “Be transformed by the renewal of your mind.”
We close with this!
Whatever our role may be, it must lead to making disciples. That is the main thing about the main thing. Jesus is clear.
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.
