Why this is important: The new covenant encompasses the Greek idea of truth as reality, as well as the Hebraic concepts of faithfulness and reliability. Jesus the Messiah is shown as “the Truth” and the apostles present the good news as “truth”.

I know the Truth because I know Jesus. Jesus is the Truth of God. Jesus promises me that I will know the Truth.

If you abide in My word continually obeying My teachings and living in accordance with them, then you are truly My disciples. And you will know the truth regarding salvation, and the truth will set you free from the penalty of sin.

Truth — It is reality, and it is Jesus

Truth corresponds to reality or “what is.” It is real. Truth is also correspondent in nature. In other words, it matches its object and is known by its referent.

For example, a teacher facing a class may say, “Now the only exit to this room is on the right.” For the class that may be facing the teacher, the exit door may be on their left, but it’s true that the door, for the professor, is on the right.

  • Hebrews 9:24  — For the Messiah did not enter a holy place made with hands, a mere copy of the true one, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us.
  • John 1:9  — There was the true Light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man.
  • John 4:23  — “But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers.”
  • John 17:3  — “This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus the Messiah whom You have sent.”
  • Ephesians 4:24  — And put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.

What is truth? The question Pontius Pilate asked centuries ago needs to be rephrased to be completely accurate. The Roman governor’s remark “What is truth?” overlooks the fact that many things can have the truth, but only one thing can be the Truth. Truth must originate from somewhere.

The stark reality is that Pilate was looking directly at the Origin of all Truth on that early morning over two thousand years ago. Not long before being arrested and brought to the governor, Jesus had made the simple statement “I am the truth” (John 14:6), which was a rather incredible statement.
