Jesus demands that I get the point. I need to see Jesus. I need to have a passionate relationship with His Father.

  • Reading the Bible and missing Him is pointless.
  • Being religious and not in a loving relationship with God is vast waste of time and energy.
  • I want to get it. I want to be in love with Him.

May I see the forest. The Bible does not give me eternal life. Jesus does.

You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life.

Do the Jews think so correctly? No. According to John, eternal life is to be found in Jesus the Word:

  • “In him was life” (1:4).
  • “I am the resurrection and the life” (11:25).
  • “I am … the life” (14:6).

Eternal life is to be found in Jesus, not in the Scriptures, contrary to what the famous first-century Jewish rabbi Hillel said: “The more study of the Law, the more life.… If a man has gained for himself words of the Law, he has gained for himself life in the world to come.” But the Scriptures do testify to Jesus as the source of eternal life.

God’s Goal: We should study the scripture so that we can know Jesus more fully. Scripture always points to Jesus.
