Family, Jesus, Matthew, Matthew 12, Matthew 12:46-50, Will of God
Family is important. We think it is the most important thing.
Jesus challenges us to understand that the most important thing is obedience to God’s goal for our lives. God has something he wants us to do today. That is really all that matters.
- This is shocking to me that family is not the most important thing.
- Jesus is clear, however.
- Jesus should be our Master, not our family.
God supports Jesus in this message. God has given all authority to Jesus. I must get it in my soul to only desire to please my Master Jesus.
While he was still speaking to the people, behold, his mother and his brothers stood outside, asking to speak to him. 48 But he replied to the man who told him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” 49 And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.” [1]

Even our Master’s earthly family did not fully understand Him or His ministry. Some of His friends thought He was mad. But Jesus did not want the honor that comes from people. While He was not disrespectful toward His physical family, He did emphasize the family of God.
Note His use of the word “whosoever”. This paralleled His beautiful invitation in Matthew 11:28–30 where He encouraged all to trust Him. If the nation would not receive Him, at least individuals within the nation—and among the Gentiles—could trust Him.[2]

Thanks, Michael. Yes, for many of us, following Jesus meant breaking from our parents’ religion, resulting in all types of family tensions.

Thanks for sharing that doing the will of the Father is all that matters as we bring glory to Him with our obedience. Peace and joy in your obedient walk with God this day!

Jesus’ family not supporting Him does comfort me when family members don’t know Christ and opposes us as Christians
